The NHS time limit on weight-loss injections, and what comes after

By the Steadie team · Updated · 2 minute read

The short version

  • NICE recommends Wegovy (semaglutide) for weight management on the NHS for up to two years.
  • For Mounjaro (tirzepatide), NICE asks for treatment to be reviewed if you haven't lost at least 5% of your weight after six months.
  • NICE also says people should get at least a year of support after a weight-loss medicine ends.
  • Rules change, so check the current guidance and what applies to you with your prescriber.

Wegovy on the NHS

NICE's technology appraisal for semaglutide (TA875) recommends it for managing overweight and obesity for a maximum of two years, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, through specialist weight management services.

So many people on NHS Wegovy will reach a planned end to treatment. Knowing the date gives you time to prepare. See building habits before you stop.

Mounjaro on the NHS

NICE's appraisal for tirzepatide (TA1026) sets out who can get it and says stopping should be considered if people haven't lost at least 5% of their weight after six months on the highest dose they can tolerate. Your prescriber will explain how it applies to you.

Support after treatment

NICE's quality standard on overweight and obesity says people should be offered support for at least a year after a weight-loss medicine or programme ends. That includes regular feedback, help building routines, and a plan for if weight starts to return. Ask your GP or weight service what's available near you.

Steadie is built to be that kind of support: a 12-month plan of small habits, short strength sessions and easy meals, alongside your NHS care, never instead of it.

Common questions

Why is Wegovy limited to two years on the NHS?

NICE's appraisal looked at the evidence and cost-effectiveness available and recommended semaglutide for a maximum of two years for weight management.

What happens after the two years?

Treatment stops, and NICE says you should be offered at least a year of support afterwards. Talk to your weight service about your plan.
